Jean-Baptiste Launay, better known as Jisbar, is famous around the world for his recreations of existing masterpieces in the context of pop and street art. He has taken many of the most iconic works from Leonardo and Warhol, Kahlo and Klimt, enriching and embellishing them with slogans, numbers and codes, creating an entirely new and contemporary story around an original classic.

This striking blend of tradition and anarchy has shaped a clear and unique identity for Jisbar and has inspired an entire generation of followers. Mixing elements of drawing and painting using water and oil-based paints, spray paint, pastels and pen work he creates multi-layered canvases that issue a challenge to every individual viewer to find their own meaning by focusing on every single detail. He loves to hide personal information in the paintings, and the abundance of messages, ideas and hidden clues generate new angles, each of which offers a new way of interpreting the painting.

Always happy to raise awareness of the old masters whose work he so admires, Jisbar celebrated the 500th anniversary of Leonardo Da Vinci’s death by sending a bold reinterpretation of Mona Lisa, ‘Punk Mona’ into space. Creating the first artwork ever to enter Earth’s orbit was an accomplishment which was feted in the world’s media. The painting hovered 33.4 km above Earth for over an hour and a half before returning home – an adventure for Lisa del Giocondo that would have thrilled the original artist, one of the greatest inventors and innovators of all time!

Born in France, Jisbar now divides his time between Paris and Amsterdam and exhibits all over the world. His distinctive images are found in such prestigious museums as the Manarat Al Saadiyat in Abu Dhabi or the National Museum for the History of Immigration in Paris. He has also enjoyed successful collaborations with brands including BMW, Armani, Ducati and JM Weston, and he is heavily involved in both environmental causes and the international fight against racism. His ‘Ducati Mona Lisa’ raised 170.000€ at auction for the Ducati Race Against Covid. Jisbar has built a huge following across Europe and his many famous fans and collectors include DJ Snake, Cardi B, Valentino Rossi and Xavier Bettel.
