Christian Hook has always been fascinated by the history and classical iconography of horses, studying the myriad portrayals in European art and literature and frequently referencing them in his work. His interest in Japan is more recent however, and originated in 2016 when he studied with a master of calligraphy in Tokyo and was entranced by the poetic concept of Ki. Defined as spirituality, creative flow and ‘the ‘ether of intention’, Ki is an integral part of many Japanese traditions, including the tea ceremony as performed by the geisha. With ‘Shinme’, Hook combines these two themes in six magnificent limited editions, one on canvas, two on paper and three on aluminium, which are now on show in the gallery.
