Rembrandt’s The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicholaes Tulp (1632 ) had a huge impact on Vincent Kamp when he first saw it in Holland and his new collection pays homage to this famous painting. Preoccupied with direct observation, Rembrandt always made an intense study of his subjects, and the way in which he describes faces with patterns of light and shadow in this painting gives an extraordinary impression of the living, thinking minds behind them; this passion for authenticity in character and storytelling is a quality that these two artists, born 400 years apart, have in common. The limited edition collection is based on a specific homage and a series of arresting portraits of characters from this central image, but this is augmented with a magnificent collection of original paintings.
