Michael Rumsby has demonstrated a rapid growth in maturity with his luminous new collection of landscapes, still life and abstract works which he has entitled ‘Shakkei’. ‘Shakkei’ (borrowed scenery’) is inspired by the artist’s post pandemic journeying through Asia and Europe and is built around the idea of borrowing from scenes or memories to enhance the beauty of the present moment. The narrative of the works explores how the human mind chooses to remember the past, often embellishing or exaggerating reality to create a source of comfort or validation in the present.
