Sherree Valentine Daines Paints for Freedom

11/12/2017

On November 30th , Sherree Valentine-Daines joined stars including Joanna Lumley, Virginia McKenna and Martin Clunes at Beyond the Bars, a gala evening at the Royal Horticultural Halls in London for the Born Free Foundation. Sherree had been invited to paint in front of a live audience of celebrities and special guests including Ruth Wilson, Rula Lenska, Jackie St Clair, Lily Travers, Katie Cleary and Lauren St John. Singing sensation Margaret Keys opened the evening with a moving rendition of Bring Him Home, followed by the classic Born Free, and the charity’s  Founder Patron Joanna Lumley led an emotional tribute to celebrate the enduring influence of Virginia McKenna’s late husband, conservationist Bill Travers. One of the highlights of the evening came when Sherree was given an easel, canvas, oil paints and half an hour to paint an elephant; the picture materialised magically from the canvas as Sherree summoned all her skills as a great impressionist painter to create an astonishing piece of work which was then auctioned by TV auctioneer James Lewis to raise substantial funds for the Foundation.

Born Free has been running its Beyond the Bars campaign throughout 2017 to highlight the plight of captive wild animals worldwide. The campaign aims to expose suffering and neglect, recommend improvements to animal welfare and the enforcement of legislation, to increase public awareness, support the training of more vets inspectors, and close substandard zoos.
